These are cutting edge treatments that provide low friction without the use of metal ligatures or rubber bands. Their main advantage lies in faster treatment and the requirement of less force which therefore causes less discomfort.
The self-ligating braces do not need ligatures to fix orthodontic wires, because they have a self-ligating system. All braces have an area to place the orthodontic arch, this area is called the slot (or groove). The slot of the self-ligating brackets is closed by an end cap or gate, so that the wire is enclosed in the bracket and can exert its action with less friction.
The self-ligating brackets allow us to compensate for major problems more easily without having to extract teeth. The treatments which used to last 24 or 30 months now rarely last more than 18 to 24 months. The self-ligating systems used by Dr. Friedlander are SmartClip ® and Damon ®.
